Vegan Burgers with a twist
I was contacted by a renowned food stylist in the United States. She told me there she was coming over to see her brother and wanted to do a test shoot while she was in London. I was delighted with the idea but was not sure what to shoot. She is one of the top food stylists in the US and I did not want to wait out time shooting something frivolous.
After some time, I felt every idea was either over the top or underwhelming. In the end, I thought it would be great to do something familiar, but with a twist! I had been to a food show and saw some fantastic hamburgers made with buns as black as night and red sauce dripping out of them. I had been looking at food all day but this was the one thing that stopped me in my tracks. To this day, this is the only memory I have the entire show.
I told her we are going to do Vegan Burgers with Black and Red buns! There will be steel and fire! Ans e will throw in some french fries as well! After she heard my idea, she did not bother to ask any questions, just said, “great, I’ll be there!”
Little did I know how hard it would be to get these coloured buns without making them myself. I spoke with a friend who owns a café. He told me there everyone wants these buns and that he had been looking for a supplier for four years. Fortunately, after about a week of looking and lots of social media posts, I finally found someone local that would make them.
It was a full-on shoot with six different burgers, a lot of work and a lot of fun. In the end, we got all 6 burgers with two looks for each one. Unfortunately, we ran out of time before we could get the group shot done. Buy this time the other burgers were looking tired and so where we. With an hour left for clean up, we decided to call it a wrap.
